New UANI Resource Highlights Iran's Proxy War in Yemen
Iran's Houthi Proxy Fires Missiles Twice at American Destroyer in Major Provocation

New York, NY - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) today released a resource on Iran's proxy war in Yemen and its Houthi allies. The Houthis are a Shi'a extremist group that has violently opposed the Yemeni government for more than ten years. In 2014, following their rejection of a peace agreement, the Houthis seized the capital, Sana'a, plunging the country into civil war.

The Houthi slogan "God is great! Death to America! Death to Israel! Curse upon the Jews/ Victory to Islam!" emulates the Iranian regime's own "Death to America" motto and extremist ideology, underscoring the group's links to Tehran. Iran's significant ties to the group have ranged from political and financial support to frequent shipments of arms (some of which have been interdicted) and military training.

On October 9 and 12, the Houthis fired anti-ship missiles at the destroyer USS Mason, which has been conducting routine operations in international waters off the coast of Yemen. The missiles failed to hit their target, either falling short or being intercepted by the USS Mason's air defense missile system. In response, on October 13, U.S. cruise missile strikes destroyed three Houthi coastal radar installations believed to have been used in the attacks on the USS Mason.

The missiles fired by the Houthis may have been supplied by Iran. According to Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis, "It's no secret that Iran has been actively supplying them and giving them the tools of war."  And in a sign of the importance Tehran places on their support of the Houthis, Iran deployed two warships to the Gulf of Aden in response to the U.S. strikes.

The UANI Houthis and Yemen Proxy War reports are part of the new UANI resource, "Iran's Quest for Regional Dominance: Proxy Wars & Subversion," which features an interactive map displaying Iran's proxy wars and subversive activities.

Since its inception in 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran has aggressively sought to "export" its Islamic Revolution and remake the Middle East under its dominion. Iran's quest for regional hegemony has ultimately caused tremendous instability throughout the Middle East, enflaming sectarian divisions and triggering devastating wars that have left hundreds of thousands dead.
